73rd Speech Day: Dreams Fly On Wings

One of the brightest highlights of the school year is our annual Speech and Prize Giving Day, a cherished occasion where the TKGS community comes together to recognise and celebrate the accomplishments of our students and staff. This year, as TKGS marks her 73rd year of excellence in education, the celebration was held under the inspiring theme Somnia Alis Volant – Dreams Fly on Wings. The theme served as a timely reminder that dreams take flight through courage, perseverance and the support of a caring community.

This year, we were privileged to welcome a special Guest of Honour, Dr Tiah Ling, whose inspiring journey embodies the very spirit of our theme. Guided by a deep sense of purpose and compassion, Dr Tiah stepped beyond the familiar to serve communities in need. At the end of 2022, she left her stable role as an emergency medicine specialist in Singapore to work with the Mae Tao Clinic, where she helped establish an Emergency Care Unit and contributed significantly to strengthening border health services.
Her story is a powerful testament to the belief that dreams are not merely aspirations, but visions brought to life through courage and perseverance. In choosing service over comfort, Dr Tiah reminds us that when we dare to pursue what truly matters, our dreams can take flight and create meaningful change both in our lives, and in the lives of others.
“Give yourself permission to have more than one story – you are every curve you choose to begin, including those you cannot imagine.” – Dr Tiah Ling.

Our valedictorian, Olivia Lu, offered a thoughtful reflection on her journey through TKGS by comparing it to a folded piece of origami — one that requires pressure, precision, and at times, the willingness to start over when things do not go as planned. Her metaphor beautifully captured the challenges, growth and perseverance that shape every student’s school experience. Despite the difficulties faced along the way, Olivia expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support she and her peers received throughout their years in TKGS.
“When we fell short, we were supported to bounce back and begin again. And through those challenges, we learnt that resilience isn’t an inborn personality trait. It’s an attitude that can be cultivated.” – Olivia Lu, Valedictorian of Class 2025.

Beyond the presentation of academic awards to our deserving TKGians, the event also honoured achievements in co-curricular pursuits and service to others, reflecting the school’s belief in nurturing well-rounded individuals. It was a heartwarming occasion that brought together students, staff, parents and guests in a spirit of gratitude and pride. More than a celebration of success, the occasion was a tribute to the dedication, resilience and aspirations that continue to define the TKGS family.
