TKGS Sparkling Moments
Introduced in 2019, it has become a tradition for students and staff to recollect significant moments that touched them in the year. We call it TKGS Sparkling Moments. It gives students the opportunity to express what they appreciate of the school, teachers and classmates. TKGS Sparkling Moments could be amazing accomplishments by individuals, teams and classes. They are also cherished memories of school events like Leaders Investiture, and the moment of pride winning a class competition. Or it could be times when teachers and students are inspired by the team work and class spirit shown during cohort camps, Sports Carnival, the fortnightly TK GLOW! and TK Spirit Week. More often than not, the Sparkling Moments we love are the simple, ordinary things we do in our daily interactions that touch a heart, enlighten the mind and bring laughter to all. What we call - Little things with huge significance. TKGS Sparkling Moments are about people and relationships. May you enjoy reading the following Sparkling Moments!

Welcoming the Year Of The Horse together in TKGS

Chinese New Year is a meaningful festival that symbolises new beginnings, reunion and good fortune. This year’s celebration at TKGS came alive with colourful decorations and lively performances that filled the school with festive cheer. Celebrating the occasion together with our classmates made the experience especially meaningful and memorable. The highlight of the event was the exciting lion dance performance, which thrilled the audience and added energy to the festivities.
On the morning of the celebration, each class prepared a delicious spread of snacks, food and drinks to enjoy together. The aroma of homemade treats, the smiles on students’ faces and the lively chatter made the class breakfast especially heartwarming. “As we all gathered to enjoy our breakfast, I was truly grateful to spend the morning with my class,” shared Alisyah from 4C3. The Chinese New Year class decoration competition also brought classmates closer together. Students worked hand in hand to transform their classrooms with festive decorations, filling the spaces with shades of red and gold that reflected the joyful spirit of the season.

After the reunion breakfast, students took part in a Chinese calligraphy activity where they explored the art of writing auspicious words and phrases. Many followed the tutorials carefully and proudly showed their completed works to their friends. Laughter filled the classroom as students compared their creations with one another. The activity also allowed students to bring home their calligraphy pieces as a meaningful keepsake from the celebration.
The hall programme began with a dynamic performance by the Symphonic Band accompanied by the guzheng. This was followed by an electrifying wushu demonstration and a live Chinese calligraphy showcase, which captivated the audience with its powerful movements and artistry. Students also enjoyed an engaging Chinese opera performance, where some were invited on stage to learn a few dance movements.

As part of the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, our international students participated in the traditional practice of 拜年 (bai nian) with the school leaders and their teacher mentors. These students expressed their appreciation for the care and support they have received by sharing CNY greetings, presenting oranges as symbols of good fortune, and giving handmade New Year cards, which were warmly received by the school leaders and their mentors. To add to the celebrations, Ms Chew also prepared New Year goodies for them to enjoy together in the hostel, creating a warm and joyful festive atmosphere.
This year’s Chinese New Year celebration was truly one to remember, with a vibrant array of activities and performances. The atmosphere in the hall was lively as students cheered and supported the performers on stage. The celebration ended on a joyful note, bringing the school community together to welcome the new year with positivity and a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture and traditions.

Together We Keep Singapore Strong

Guided by this year’s Total Defence Day theme, “Together We Keep Singapore Strong,” students at Tanjong Katong Girls’ School took part in a series of activities that emphasised preparedness, resilience and collective responsibility.
During lunchtime, students participated in activities organised by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), where they learnt how to use a fire extinguisher and explored a fire engine up close. These hands-on experiences helped them better appreciate the role of emergency responders in keeping Singapore safe.
The commemoration also included a Total Defence Day observance in the Mindfulness Garden, followed by a simulated lockdown exercise. A brief power disruption during the day further encouraged students to reflect on how they could stay prepared in unexpected situations.

Reflecting on the experience, Samrah Sammil (4S5) shared that when the Wi-Fi couldn’t work on her iPad and the lights, fans and clocks all went out, the class had to rely on the wind and their devices to check the time. Through this, she realised that it is important that they do not panic and that everyone should be patient and calm, ensuring that everyone is safe and not to leave anyone behind. Sasha Lai (4R6) noted that the power disruption caught her off guard, but her classmates and teacher were adaptable and did not let the disruption of power disrupt their lesson or affect their learning, reminding her of the importance of staying resilient in challenging situations. Lui Xin Yue Ivy (1R1) also shared how classmates looked out for one another during the heat, explaining that she helped others like fanning them and that the class continued learning by using the whiteboard, learning that they must stay united, help one another and place their safety first.
At assembly, students also reflected on how they could respond when everyday conveniences such as Wi-Fi are disrupted. Secondary 1 students learned interesting facts about the Republic of Singapore Air Force and Total Defence, while Secondary 2 students explored teamwork and problem-solving through the Guardians of the City card game led by their Uniformed Group peers.
Through these experiences, students were reminded of the importance of staying calm, adaptable and prepared, reinforcing that everyone has a part to play in keeping Singapore strong.
Building Preparedness, Family Bonds and Values Together

On Saturday, 31 January, Tanjong Katong Girls’ School hosted the Parent–Child Bonding - Responders Plus Programme (RPP), organised by Parentlink in collaboration with Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Conducted on the TKGS campus, the four-hour programme brought parents and their children together for a meaningful day of hands-on learning centred on emergency preparedness and life-saving skills. Guided by experienced SCDF officers, participants learn about essential emergency preparedness and life-saving skills, including first aid, CPR and AED usage, fire safety, evacuation procedures and SGSecure awareness.

This programme provided a nurturing and supportive environment for TKGians and their families to learn side by side, while contributing to a vibrant and dynamic school life through active participation and realistic simulations. At the same time, it reinforced community- and character-centred values, strengthening family bonds and nurturing a shared sense of responsibility, resilience and care for others within the wider community.
Unboxing a World of Possibilities: Sec 1 iPad Unboxing Day

On a vibrant morning in TKGS, our Secondary 1 TKGians eagerly gathered for the highly anticipated iPad unboxing event, a significant milestone in their Personal Learning Device (PLD) journey. The event was not just about hardware; it was a "teachable moment" designed to cultivate a heart of gratitude and a sense of responsibility as students learned to care for their new digital companions.
The atmosphere was electric as students carefully unsealed their devices, guided by a supportive team of staff and student tech champions. This hands-on experience is central to our mission of developing inquisitive learners who can co-construct knowledge in a dynamic school setting. During the session, students expressed excitement about how their new iPads would empower their self-directed learning.

As the session concluded, our Sec 1s left with more than just iPads; they carried a renewed sense of agency and a commitment to being ethical digital learners. By integrating technology with our core RICH values - Resilience, Integrity, Compassion, and Humility - we continue to build a community-centered environment where every TKGian can lead from within and serve the common good.

A Meaningful Start: Building Bonds Through Cohort Experiences

The school gates flew open after the two-month break, welcoming TKGians with the highly anticipated cohort experiences. This unforgettable tradition provided countless opportunities for students to connect deeply with classmates, fostering new friendships and belonging from the first days of school.
From class banner painting to bouldering, the wide range of activities created an excellent platform for TKGians and TKChers to make cherished memories together. These shared experiences encouraged teamwork, resilience, and mutual support whilst reflecting on the school's values.

'At first, when I joined TKGS, I was quite apprehensive of what was to come, but my Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs) were very welcoming, and they made me feel like I belonged. The most memorable experience for me was definitely the campfire night because it was very fun and a great way to the start of the year!' shares Mariam Binte Mohammed Faizal (1I2).
'My cohort experience was fun as I got to bond with my friends and make memories with them. The museum visit was very interesting and educational, and I got to learn a lot of new things,' shares Anatolia Deschambeault (2R6).
'The cycling experience was very interesting as I had never cycled such a long distance before, and it really helped me to get to know my new classmates,' shares Natasha Lee (3C3).
'Personally, bouldering was challenging as I had to overcome my limitations, but the motivation of reaching the top gave me great satisfaction,' reflects Raeann Loke (4H4).

'Being an OGL to Sec 1s was very rewarding. It was amazing to see the potential prefects step up, showing their leadership qualities,' reminisced Janelle Pang (4R1), Prefectorial Board Executive Committee (PB EXCO), Head of Secretariat.
The week ended with the long-awaited campfire, where students sang and danced under the stars, embodying their hard work and camaraderie. The cohort experience was truly a memorable and meaningful start to the school year.

Innofest: Believe Big Innovate Bold Empower All

InnoFest 2026 was an inspiring day of learning for our staff. Under the theme "Believe Big. Innovate Bold. Empower All," teachers gathered to share creative ways to help our students learn, reinforcing our belief that every student has the potential to succeed.

A highlight was the exchange of ideas on using tech tools like SALiS and SchoolAI to help students become more self-directed. Beyond the screen, innovation was everywhere; teachers showcased students building lung models in Science, conducting Geographical Investigations in urban neighbourhoods, and using gamified activities to master Music theory.
Each sharing reflected our commitment to believing big in our students' capabilities—seeing beyond surface behaviours to recognise the kinesthetic learner who needs movement, the visual processor who thrives with hands-on models, and the collaborative thinker who excels in group investigations.
